Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says the three bus and taxi terminals constructed by the FCT administration (FCTA) will commence operations once approved by the federal executive council (FEC).

According to NAN, Wike spoke on Thursday after inspecting ongoing road projects in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

In 2024, the FCTA began constructing three bus terminals in Kugbo, Mabushi and the central business district (CBD).

The Kugbo and Mabushi terminals were completed and inaugurated in June 2025 to mark President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office, while the CBD terminal is at the completion stage.

However, TheCable had reported that the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals remained unoperational six months after their inauguration.

Addressing the delay, Wike said the facilities could not begin operations because the selected private operators must be approved by the FEC, noting that the contract was beyond ministerial approval.

He added that the procurement process had been cleared by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

“After building the terminals we said we are not going to allow the transport secretariat to run it. It will be handled by private individuals who have the competence,” the minister said.

“It’s not as easy as we thought. It requires FEC’s approval, but I am confident that in the next FEC, the contracts will be presented for approval.

“So, we believe in the next FEC meeting it will be approved, and once that is done, then. we will hit the road.”

During the inauguration of the completed terminals, Wike had disclosed plans to construct additional terminals in Gwagwalada, Bwari and Kuje.

He said the terminals represent a milestone in the FCTA’s efforts to modernise transportation infrastructure and tackle indiscriminate parking in the territory.

According to him, the facilities will provide safe and organised spaces for vehicles, reducing traffic congestion on major roads.

Biodun Otunola, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Planet Project Ltd, had said the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals were designed to process more than 10,000 passengers daily.

He added that each terminal can accommodate 120 buses and taxis per day for both intercity and intracity travel.

Otunola said the CBD terminal, which is nearing completion, is designed mainly for intra-city operations.

On employment, he said each terminal is expected to engage at least 100 workers across security, ticketing, facility management, control room, electrical, mechanical, maintenance and bus control units.

He added that based on needs assessment, the FCT would require at least 12 bus and taxi terminals to adequately serve key locations.

“It’s very huge. It’s like running a mini airport,” he said.

“We will need one in Gwagwalada, one in Kuje in Gwarinpa, and one in Lugbe, including the city centre in places like Area 1, Area 3 in Garki, Wuse and other strategic locations.”
